Steam trains are a fascinating mixture of the explosive power of steam combined with incredibly balanced engineering. To me it's amazing how such heavy machinery can function so smoothly and swiftly - they seem to grow lighter the faster they run! Cock 'O' The North itself was built to run between Edinburgh and Aberdeen during the 1930's and remains the most powerful passenger loco ever built for the British railways. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley who's engines were renowned for their elegance and mechanical efficiency. Sir Nigel is most famous for designing the Flying Scotsman and later the record-breaking A4 class Mallard which holds the steam record at 126mph. I chose to depict this locomotive as visually it has a fantastic presence and power combined with a truly majestic streamlined form.
