The Peppercorn Class locos were some of the last stream engines built for the British railways and combined all the lessons and advances gained from their predecessors. Whilst they may not have been as glamourous as some the Peppercorns were fantastically well engineered - this engine No 60156 - Great Central ran 96,000 miles in one year! What I love about steam engines is the complexity and scale on display - and to see a locomotive start off, transforming from a solid giant forged of iron into an amazing symphony of pistons, rods and wheels powered by the contained violence of pressurized steam, is a trully majestic sight. Sadly all the original Peppercorn locomotives were scrapped at the end of the steam age but incredibly an entirely new engine has been built by a dedicated trust of volunteers.
